Google to unify search results with Universal Search…

This story broke just a little over a day ago.

Will you be ready for the change coming Wednesday?

It appears that Google is going to unify all the different departments of searches into one category. Google search, video, news and everything all in one search screen. No more need to toggle between categories.

Perhaps great for the number of clicks this will produce, but the question remains for those who are keyword focused and already have positions and want to keep them….

What will this mean to the rules of getting and staying in the top results on Google and what will happen to your search engine rankings come this Wednesday when the change goes into effect?

Will the power of using all the other channels like video, images, news and maps allow you to gain more power in your own search engines listings?

Only time will tell…

  • I am confused by this. First, I agree with a comment made earlier that I don't want to have to look through all the entries for a particular keyword (podcasts, etc.)

    Also, I"m not sure how much harder this will make it to rank for particular keywords. There will be a lot more competition it seems.
  • Whether is a good news or not I really do not know. Though the only means I am employing my internet marketing tool and resource site at the moment is SEO and google comes in serious consideraiton, however I am not an expert in SEO.

    So Jim and others, we would like to hear from you guys what this development means to all of us.

    There may be vast multitudes who welcome the *intrusion* of video and news items into their search results, but I just want the facts, i.e. honest-to-goodness answers to the question that caused me to do the search in the first place.

    Video? Images? News? Maps? That's not power; to me, that's clutter. That's fluff.

    Why would Google not just let every searcher pick a default mode? You want video? Put a check in the box. You want news? Put a check in the box. My money says that's where we will end up.

    It makes me wonder if this move is a smoke screen. Maybe Goog is just trying to disguise the struggle they are having in delivering quality results...

    Content is King!!!! Google has just confirmed what has been well know for a long time. If you have an item on your website it needs to be targeted, contextual and relevant to your website theme. Whether it be audio,visual or written, your keywords needs to be targeted.
  • What interests me hear is how Google will deliver these results, the only logical format I can think of is that they will take the tabbed approach, basically placing category tags at the top of the page for each service such as videos, images ect. It will be interesting to see your thoughts on this.
  • The Google shift reminds me somewhat of the approach to linking and relevancy used in butterfly marketing.

    Publishers who master and use the expanding so called Web 2.0 paradigm will seem to benefit the most.

    This may create a whole new industry on the internet for those who can deliver useful products that exploit Google's new search combinations.

  • Interesting. It could be another step toward basing rankings on user behavior after the click.

    If Google no longer differentiates between different types of content, they can't use the separate ranking criteria they now use for the different types. I mean, how can they compare a full page of textual content against a title, description, and tags on a video page to determine which page is more relevant for a search term if they rely purely on comparing the text? It's comparing apples to oranges.

    But if they switch their criteria to focus more on how long searchers stay on the page after they click, or other types of behavioral criteria, they're no longer comparing apples to oranges.

    This could put textual-based pages at a huge disadvantage in the rankings. Consider that people tend to be quick to hit the Back button on a textual page if they don't see what they're looking for immediately. Combine that with the fact that people generally are a lot more patient in giving a video a chance to play out before they bail out on it. That gives video a built-in advantage in any behavioral based algorithms.

    It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
  • Leaving aside the website promotion side of things, I'm confused by this move. As a searcher I don't want to have to wade through videos, podcasts and all manner of other formats when I'm looking for blog posts. I wouldn't want to wade through the blog posts when I was looking for video's either.

    Are they trying to get me to search at live.com instead?
  • Hi Jim,

    I think it's great news for anybody that has a website with good content, does their keyword research, and original graphics and videos. I'm hoping this is Google's way of weeding out the black hats, link farms and those who love to throw websites up just long enough to cheat Adsense.

    Time will tell, won't it?
